You are no doubt familiar with dental veneers. Many actors and actresses have had smile makeovers with dental veneers. But what are Lumineers? A Lumineer is a type of dental veneer that requires less preparation, which means little or no removal of your natural tooth structure. It’s good to know the differences between veneers and Lumineers, so if you are thinking of having veneers placed, you can make an informed choice.
While veneers are generally thin and require less preparation than a crown, they are still thicker than Lumineers. When restoring teeth, space is a consideration. There is only so much room in your mouth and, therefore, restorations such as crowns and veneers require the removal of tooth structure to accommodate their size and thickness. Traditional veneers are wafer-thin shells about .5 mm in thickness. That means, in order for the veneers to sit flush against the front of your teeth, .5mm of tooth structure needs to be removed, or else your teeth will appear bulky. When tooth structure is being removed, it may require anesthesia to minimize sensitivity and/or pain.
Lumineers, on the other hand, are much thinner, about the thickness of a contact lens. Because they are ultra-thin, they can be placed seamlessly over your teeth. Although your teeth will need to be slightly etched to ensure a solid and permanent bond, there is no need for anesthesia, removal of healthy tooth structure, or the placement of temporaries.
